TALKS

MAST.AUDITORIUM

CÉCILE B. EVANS

In their research related to video, installation, sculpture, collage and performance, Cécile B. Evans explores the rebellion of emotion as it comes into contact with technological, ideological, and physical structures. At MAST, the artist delves into their new work Reality or Not, on view at MAMbo, together with curators Francesco Zanot and Lorenzo Balbi. The talk addresses the issue of the production of reality, who it belongs to and how to work towards finding new ways of shaping reality and embracing multiple timelines.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2

TALKS

MAST.AUDITORIUM

EDWARD BURTYNSKY
NEW WORKS AFTER ‘ANTHROPOCENE’

Four years after the huge success of the “Anthropocene” exhibition, currently on show in Taiwan, Edward Burtynsky comes back to the MAST to tell us all about his latest projects, including In the Wake of Progress, African Studies and Xylella Studies. After the presentation of his works, a conversation with Urs Stahel will focus on the climate crisis, reflecting on key questions such as: How can art generate a positive impact on environmental issues? What can artists do to arouse consciousness and inspire change? How can we change perspectives in order to modify the behaviours of individuals, corporations and governments? The tools are all there, we just have to pick them up and use them.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3

PERFORMANCE

MAST.AUDITORIUM

PIERRE BASTIEN & LOUIS LAURAIN
C.N.T.

(France) Italian premiere

Pierre Bastien cornet, prepared cornet, mecanium, mutes, objects
Louis Laurain cornet, prepared cornet, mutes, objects

music by Louis Laurain, Pierre Bastien

Composer and multi-instrumentalist, the Frenchman Pierre Bastien is best known as the inventor of a series of sound machines he calls Mecanium, bizarre contraptions constructed from electric motors, turntable platters, pulleys, gears and elastic bands that drive strings, drumsticks, and parts of musical instruments from all over the world.
Far removed from the luxurious musical automata of the late 18th century, his fragile assemblages evoke Futurist mechanicism and Dadaist irony, but as if deformed by a creepy, nostalgic and childlike vein that harks back to the very childhood of the artist, who has been fond of the Meccano construction game since he was four years old.
For his 70th birthday, Bastien returns to Bologna for a new collaboration between Mast and AngelicA (after the 2015 installation and concert Lyrical Machines / Reviver): C.N.T., a new duo formed with Louis Laurain.
Alongside the sounds provided by selected pieces of Mecanium, the musicians present themselves with handcrafted modified piston horns with applied objects, creating an unprecedented and always surprising sound world.

WELCOME TO MARWEN
Robert Zemeckis, USA, 2018, 116, o.v. with Italian subtitles

Mark Hogancamp stages on his own lawn the exploits of his alter ego Hogie, an American pilot fighting against the Nazis and protected by the women of Marwen, a transfiguration of the friends who helped Mark during therapy. In fact, he has just recovered from a homophobic beating and a long but insufficient rehabilitation, resulting in the loss of both his memory and his ability to draw. He processes the tragedy by photographing the scenes he creates in the garden, with dolls of elegant women and action figures of soldiers. When a new neighbour, Nicol, arrives, Mark tries to straighten out his life and free himself from his addiction to painkillers.
