FOUND PHOTOGRAPHY: NARRAZIONE E RIAPPROPRIAZIONE IN FOTOGRAFIA
In conversation with Francesco Zanot
Over the course of his career, Kessels has come to the fore as a main and unquestionable reference in the field of so-called ‘found photography’. Instead of shooting new images, for most of his projects he brings together pre-existent photographs and reuses them as tiles to form his own mosaic. He is an artist without a camera or even a lens: in his practice, photography is a ready-made element to be sampled and re-contextualised. The result is a sort of eco-system of images, through which nothing is added to the enormous quantity of imagery which now crowds out the world and grows exponentially day by day, but which on the contrary merely recoups and recycles that which is already there.
BIOGRAPHY
Erik Kessels is a Dutch artist, curator and communication designer, with great interest in photography. Since 1996, he is Creative Partner of communications agency KesselsKramer in Amsterdam/London.
As an artist and curator Kessels published over 75 books of his ‘re-appropriated’ images, he was editor of the alternative photography magazine Useful Photography and wrote the international bestseller Failed It! He taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam), Écal (Lausanne), Raffles and NABA (Milan) and at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture.
He curated numerous exhibitions and co-curated From Here on together with Martin Parr, Joachim Schmid, Clement Chéroux and Joan Fontcuberta. His works were shown in many international institutions such as SFMOMA.

CREATING A DIGITAL REFLECTION
In conversation with Francesco Zanot
Danielle Udogaranya, aka Ebonix, is a content creator, gaming expert and 3D artist focuses on groups of still faceless people in order to give them an identity. Only this time rather than photographs, she uses digital avatars. And the context is no longer the real world, but its alternative in virtual space. Essentially, the simulated universe reproduces the same stereotypes as the tangible one, paradoxically distinguishing between the norm and the exception. Ebonix overcomes this distinction and creates avatars that allow those belonging to categories excluded or neglected by the developers to finally be able to recognise themselves in the game.
BIOGRAPHY
Danielle Udogaranya (London, UK, 1991)—best known as Ebonix—is a content creator, DE&I Games Consultant and 3D artist. Fuelled by a frustration with the lack of diversity in The Sims 4, she decided to take matters into her own hands by teaching herself 3D modelling and creating hair, clothes and accessories that she felt represented her. Her content quickly led her working directly with The Sims on the addition of over 100 skintones and afro hair, ushering in a generational change for new Simmers.
Through her content creation projects create space for black, POC, women, femmes and non-men, Udogaranya has since become an advocate for diversity and representation in gaming and has been featured on Apple, BBC, Vice, The Verge, The Guardian, and many more.
