“Never lack joy. But I want it to be born in you: and it will be born in you if it arises in you”.
Seneca
Each of us experiences moments of stalemate, when we do not find the strength to move forward or do not know which direction to take. Literature teaches us that we have always struggled with this feeling of helplessness; what has changed is the way we respond. If in the past we sought an escape in religion, today we find it in a new faith that celebrates the cult of the ego. Deception, however, is just around the corner, for by believing only in itself, narcissism only deepens its imprisonment.
In his new book, Vito Mancuso proposes a philosophy of liberation to identify and dismantle the traps that hold our lives captive and open us up to a more authentic existence, to the point of experiencing the profound joy of living. By following a path of small but constant liberating steps, we discover that each person’s destiny is played out in the world we carry within: for if we are the trap, we are also our liberator. As we come to this awareness, we will be able to find balance and generate clear mental energy, the most effective tool for serenity and the source of joy.
